ChoosingCharter is a free discovery and matching platform for California charter schools, built for the families who choose them and the schools that serve them.
What we do
ChoosingCharter brings together a directory of over 1,250 California charter schools in one place. Parents answer a short, guided quiz about their child's needs — academics, learning environment, logistics, support services, activities, and community — and our matching engine scores every eligible school against those answers, producing a clear list of strong fits with the reasons behind each match. Families can explore schools, compare options side by side, track open houses and tours, and send inquiries to schools they're interested in. Schools can claim and verify their profiles, publish enrollment timelines and events, and connect with interested families.
Who it's for
We serve parents and guardians navigating one of the most important decisions they'll make for their child, especially families who don't know where to start with charter options. We also serve charter schools — from single-site campuses to large networks — that want a transparent way to reach the families whose needs they genuinely match. Matching is always free for families, and school participation is never required to appear in our directory.
How we build it
ChoosingCharter is built and operated by a small team of educators, engineers, and California parents who have been through the charter search themselves. School data is drawn from verified school representatives, government education datasets, and official school sources, with a clear source-priority policy so verified information is never silently overwritten. We believe in transparent matching: sponsored placements are always labeled and never influence match scores, and we welcome corrections from schools and families at any time.
